Schoeërmölle
You will sleep in a former water mill from the 18th century. It originally served as a sanding mill and was later on converted into a grain / hammer mill and a mixer for cattle feed.

THE SCHOEËRMÖLLE (THE SANDING MILL)
THE SCHOEËRMÖLLE (THE SANDING MILL)
The Schoeërmölle - Sanding mill (grinding mill). (built in the mid-18th century)
Around 1700 there were three large needle factories in Vaals (the Trostdorff family). Later a number of cloth factories were added (the Von Clermont family). The area around Vaals to Epen contaiins many rivers and creecks. This explains why mills arose here that often originally worked for the rich Vaalser needle and textile industry. Sheets were filled in fulling mills and needles were sanded and polished in the sanding mills. Similarly in our mill.
Before the French era, the mill was owned by the Burtscheid abbey (near Aachen). After the Abbey was seized by the French in 1803, the Trostdorff family became the owner of the "Schoeërmölle", but sold it again in 1822. The cloth industry in Vaals fell into dispair due to a bankruptcy by Von Clermont. The fulling- and sanding mills were slowly converted into grain mills. The Schoeërmölle changed ownership three times between 1822 and 1858 and in 1847 it became a grain mill. The mill eventually came into the possession of the Deutz and Spierts families.
Due to sales and inheritance, the mill changed ownership many times between 1858 and 2012. In 1948 the mill was converted into a warehouse with a hammer mill and a mixer for cattle feed. In 1982 the mill was put out of operation. Nowadays you can spend the night here and "taste" the atmosphere of days long gone ... at Bij Tante Toos!

UP AND DOWN THE HILLS(= NOT BORING + FLAT)
Discover the surroundings and relax!
This is no story here about the beautiful South Limburg hills and its many sights. You better read that here. Much more interesting ... what can be discovered within a few meters or kilometers of "Bij Aunt Toos"?
- Next to us you will find the beautiful Abbey Sint-Benedictusberg with beautiful architecture by Hans van der Laan (abbot and architect)
- behind us, on the Sneeuwberg, you can observ the remnants of a less pleasant period in our history. The anti-tank wall which was part of the Westwall / Siegfried Line from WWII.
- the Selzerbeek flows a few meters away. It contains many fossils such as belemnites ... are you going to find them?
- the cathedral city of Aachen is on walking distance. If you prefer to go by car, then your car must have a green environmental sticker. It is much easier to take the bus to Aachen. It stops near the B&B.
- Of course you can also discover the neighbourhood on a bike. You can easily rent these just around our corner at the Powerarea
in Lemiers.
- and then finally Aunt Toos herself. Our sweet cat and name giver of the B&B. Aunt Toos became a very elderly lady and unfortunately we had to say goodbye to her in 2018. We have two new cats now, Guus and Loesje. Always in for a pet and a good conversation ... if they aren't chasing the mice.
We are always willing to share more fun facts and less discovered places!
Oooh yeah ... if you want a nice and especially interesting tour in Aachen (D), then we can recomend you Via-Cultura!
AND THIS IS US (Johan & Dave)
(Partly) back to our roots.....
We are Johan and Dave.
Until recently, we lived in the most beautiful "rotten city" in the Netherlands: Rotterdam, and we took the plunge and moved to the Limburg hills, together with our cats Moos and Miyo.
But South Limburg isn't entirely unfamiliar territory for us.
Dave was born and raised in South Limburg and moved to Rotterdam in 1993 for his studies and ended up staying there....
Johan is from Maassluis, but studied for years in Maastricht and Heerlen.
So, we're partly going back to our roots!
The first time we visited Mamelis, we immediately fell in love with the house and the location.
A beautiful half-timbered house with an old mill and a wonderful view of the hills!
In the garden, a fantastic view of the abbey with the sound of the Selzerbeek stream in the background.
That's pure bliss!
We'll make sure you have a pleasant stay and can relax to the fullest.
Adieë wa !!!!
(see you soon - in the dialect)
